The temps are finally cooling down, in most places that is, and along with a chill in the air, fall and winter come with some of the best fashion trends of the year, no matter your shape, style, sexuality, or gender. As cold as the weather is, androgynous style is hot, hot, hot. Like the new Tegan and Sara collaboration with Wildfang says, “The future is fluid.” which means anything goes. Fashion is a space where you can freely express yourself, and dress on the outside to match the way you feel on the inside, whether that means feminine, masculine, or somewhere in between.
From Annie Lennox to Evan Rachel Wood, gender neutral style has evolved while still maintaining the gender bending, line-blurring vibe it’s always been known for. With the rise in popularity of stars like the aforementioned Wood, along with model-turned-actress Ruby Rose sparking a more mainstream audience for the look, you’re going to start seeing androgynous fashion everywhere. Let’s not forget the men out there too, with gone-too-soon legends Prince and David Bowie consistently and proudly touting nonconformity in their statement making fashion choices.
Just this month, BBC published a piece on the rise of genderless style in the workplace, and while some of us are veterans when it comes to blurring the lines of femininity and masculinity in fashion, androgynous style is new to many others. If you’re ready to smash the patriarchy and stay true to what feels good on your body rather than what you’re expected to look like as a woman, it’s time to get on board. Here are some tips for rocking androgynous style this fall:
1. DRESS IT UP WITH A MENSWEAR INSPIRED SUIT
With a suit look, the rules are, there are no rules. Make it monochromatic, or mix and match. Add a tie or a bow tie, button it up, or let it hang loose. Heels or high tops, anything goes. Just make sure its chic, structured, and makes you feel like a million bucks.
2. KEEP IT CASUAL WITH A PAIR OF JOGGERS
We’ve already talked about how on-trend athleisure is this season, so take that one step further in your every day look with a fab pair of joggers. You can keep them super casual with an oversized tee and some sneakers, or crank up the volume with a pair of metallic joggers, a sweater, and some pretty pumps. The key to androgynous style is that you can make it your own depending on your mood!
3. DON’T FORGET THE OXFORDS
Whether it’s the shoes or the shirt, Oxford styles seem to be synonymous with androgynous style because of their structure and simplicity. I’m a fan of Oxford shoes because of how versatile they are. Try a patent leather or suede pair for a really eye-catching look this season.
4. BOMBERS AND BLAZERS.
It’s fall, which means you better be arming your wardrobe with an arsenal of jackets. Hot, cold, or somewhere in between means lots of light layers, and adding a bomber of a blazer can completely transform your look. Keep it classic with some leather accents or color blocking, or add some feminine flair with a floral print.
5. WHEN IN DOUBT, MIX IT UP
When one isn’t enough, don’t be afraid to combine any and all of these trends into one look. Edgy jacket with a suit? Slay. Oxfords with some jogger inspired trousers? Killing it. The fashion world is what you make it, and a trend doesn’t happen until someone starts it.
